Cloth Diapering in review

Our Cloth Diapering Experience With Child #1

Cloth diapering,  in this age of throw away everything. Of Advances in health, technology, and labor saving devices, WHY on earth would ANYONE choose to go back to cloth diapers, right?

Well we did, and yes helping the environment, and being responsible stewards of our home is a great and honorable motive- we honestly did it because it was cheaper.

Now there is a LOT to learn, and there are tons of options out there. Considering we weren't sure what our options for daycare would be, we opted for something that could be put on just like a disposable, so daycare, friends and family would be able to help without being too intimidated.
After doing hours of research, asking other parents (I didn't know any that cloth diapered- and most thought I was am insane), I had to rely heavily on reviews. We finally settled on the Kanga Care Rumparooz- G2 one size pocket diaper.

While we did purchase our diapers well before our daughter arrived, we didn't start using them on her till about 3 months. Why? I can't really remember even trying till then but we purchased the one size so save money in the end. And while they DO go down to "newborn size" which is set for approximately 6 pounds to 35-40 pounds. I have no recollection of precisely when we actually started or why we delayed other than we were nervous about meconium- which I now know is fully water soluble as long as baby is breast fed- so no problem for cloth.

Our daughter was nearly a whopping 10 pounds at birth, and barely fit into newborn clothes, so I'm not sure why we didn't start using the cloth right away. As I'm pregnant again, I will do an update when #2 arrives as there wasn't much info on the web at ALL specifically about using Rumparooz G2 on a newborn- so I WILL do it!
We also are planning on using some of the Rumparooz covers as we're doing prefolds for the little one in my belly till they fit the G2's for sure. As there was a great memorial day sale (thank you to all those who serve by the way!) I bought 3 covers, 2 with snaps (as we liked those before) and one with "aplix" AKA velcro. These have the dip in the front for the umbilical stump which you WILL need for about the first week or so. Also- even though they were much more expensive I had to buy a 2 pack of the Lil Joey diapers as I wanted to review those and let everyone know what worked for us in comparing the prefolds, pockets and all in ones for a newborn.

I will say we did have to learn how to put them on properly to prevent leaks- but please note EVERY time we have used disposables, we've had leaks/blowouts. So its not like I ever believed disposable to be more "reliable", I would say less so.
I will also say these have NOT helped Potty Train my daughter any earlier. She's an extremely intelligent (when she chooses to be), 3.5 year old; being able to read, and count forwards and backwards to 30+, loves puzzles, drawing and such, but when it comes to potty training?  ugh! What a pill. So we're not pressing the issue so it doesn't become a battle.

We have enjoyed our cloth diapering experience with the first and look forward to doing it again with #2 due here in October/November!

***I have not received any money or compensation for this brief review- just my two cents worth***
